A doula is an educated and knowledgeable care provider who understands and trusts the birth process and facilitates the experience for the parents, baby, and primary care providers. She is an advocate and a listening ear for birthing mothers before, during, and after labor. A doula also provides support and suggestions to help partners enhance their own experience of the birth.

A doula does: support the decisions of the expectant family, offer constant encouragement, suggest appropriate positions, suggest appropriate comfort measures, support the partner, and possess technical knowledge

A doula does not: make decisions for the mom or partner, perform clinical tasks, or operate or touch medical equipment
